I've gotten a couple of e-mails and even a blogger who think I'm the rude one for getting mad at the weightlifter who wanted to "work in a set." (From Tuesday's story.)
I've heard their complaints, but I still think the guy was rude to ask to work in a set. And it was especially frustrating because it was the first time I had tried the weights on my own.
If I was sitting there for awhile, then yeah, that's obnoxious.
But he was hovering over me like it was a hot slot machine in Atlantic City. And I paused for only a few seconds. I equate it to a waitress asking if you're done with your plate when you put your fork down after one bite.
It's just unnecessary.
Any more thoughts on weight machine etiquette?

He was asking, and you could have said no. Sometimes (back when I actually lifted in a gym) if I was working out with 1 or 2 others and someone asked to work in, we would say no because it would disrupt the timing of our workout. However, when I would work out alone, I would always let people work in, to give them their turn, to help 'spot', and to motivate.
If you are just starting, you could have asked the guy for tips and worked out with him.
Working in on a set isn't uncommon but he went about it the wrong way.
Also if he had any sort of understanding of program design he would have watched your first set and rest period to understand what your rest times and tempos were, he wouldn't have been hovering, that is a no-no in the gym. You either move on to another machine, or wait your turn.
If someone ever comes up to you and asks to work in, come back with "I am training to Hypertrophy and am on a 10-30 sec rest interval, will be done shortly" That will shut them up pretty quick.
Coming from a womans point of view there are a lot of times you have to deal with a macho know it all attitude, so hold your ground, you did the right thing. This is a prime example though of just one of many reasons why women are afraid to do any lifting.
I'm going to have to use that hypertrophy line sometime!
